In March 2023 the UK government announced that Derby would become the headquarters of Great British Railways - the body integrating track, trains and strategy for the national rail network. This is a landmark recognition of Derby's 180-year railway heritage, from the Midland Railway era through BR research and modern engineering. For the city's startup and innovation community, GBR's Derby base creates opportunities in rail technology, data, sustainability, digital ticketing and infrastructure services.
